We get it: social distancing is getting old. But as long as restrictions related to COVID-19 remain in effect, we all have to do what we can to find ways to have fun. Most indoor entertainment is closed completely right now, but there are still plenty of great outdoor activities you can enjoy while social distancing. The team here at Moda Apartments has pulled together some great ideas for outdoor activities in and around Monrovia, California.

But first: remember that the guidelines continue to evolve along with our understanding of COVID-19. Make sure to take note of any current restrictions or closures before setting out on the activities below. 

Take a Closer Look at a Nearby Park

One of the great things about Moda is our location. Living here means you’re not far from a number of great parks. This is a great time to explore a few of them more closely than you have before. The Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area is just around the corner. This massive local park boasts walking and biking trails, a 70-acre lake ready for fishing and boating, a swimming beach and a water play area. There’s even a model rocket launch pad area!

Explore the Arboretum

Also very close by is the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden, a great urban oasis perfect for quiet contemplation and exploration. It’s open once again, however, tickets or reservations are required to control crowds and support safe distancing measures. The LA County Arboretum is divided into various zones, including areas representing the flora of Africa and Australia. It’s a great place to discover many species of birds, reptiles, small mammals and fish.

One of the biggest draws at the Arboretum are the peacocks. These Indian Peafowl roam portions of the grounds, and the males can often be spotted displaying their ornate feathers. Bonus for summer 2020: baby peachicks are due any day!

Dive Deep into the National Forest

One of the greatest perks of living here at Moda is the stunning views of Angeles National Forest. Now is the perfect time to stop staring and get exploring! Nestled just outside the forest is Monrovia Canyon Park, an impressive city park with plenty of great views. It’s a great place to start if you’re not an avid hiker. 

Also very close by, just inside the National Forest, are Hermit Falls and Big Santa Anita Canyon. The former is a pretty easy hike suitable for families. The canyon has a wide range of trails, from easy to quite strenuous and lengthy.
